About this Course

Developed by LHP Skillnet, this unique programme is designed to enhance skills and deepen understanding in the specialist area of Dementia Care. It is accredited by QQI at Level 5, making it the first of its kind in Ireland.

The overall aim of the course is to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and competence to provide person-centred, holistic care for individuals with dementia and their families. With this purpose in mind, graduates will gain a greater understanding of dementia and associated conditions, enabling them to become reflective and person-centred healthcare workers.

THIS LHP SKILLNET PROGRAMME IS CO-FUNDED BY THE GOVERNMENT OF IRELAND, THE EUROPEAN UNION, AND NETWORK COMPANIES www.eufunds.ie

Participants must be proficient in English and have access to a modern laptop or desktop computer with a strong internet connection, camera, and microphone.

Over a span of 9 weeks, the programme provides comprehensive training in dementia care. Firstly, participants learn to explain the condition of dementia and its subsets, evaluate the impact of delirium and frailty on individuals with dementia, and understand the experiences of those living with dementia and their families. Secondly, they explore personhood and person-centered care, and how Healthcare Assistants can implement these approaches in their role.

The schedule presently comprises six weekly units and a mid-program study week. Each unit incorporates various learning methods, such as self-directed activities as well as pre-recorded and live tutorials. Furthermore, students undergo a skills assessment and receive personalized feedback in the final week. Please refer to the Programme Manual for a complete list of topics and learning outcomes.

Students complete multiple assessments to gauge their understanding and practical skills. The course takes place on our Moodle eLearning platform, offering everyone the flexibility to complete their studies at their convenience. Weekly live tutorials are also included for additional engagement and support.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive a Certificate in Dementia Care at QQI Award Level 5, recognizing their proficiency in providing quality care for individuals living with dementia.
