Postgraduate Certificate in Infection Prevention and Control (September 2023)

Course Description

LHP Skillnet has partnered with the School of Public Health at University College Cork (UCC) to deliver an online Postgraduate Certificate in Infection Prevention and Control (Level 9).

The School of Public Health at UCC is the largest public health academic unit in the Republic of Ireland, studying the causes of disease and the factors that promote good health, new technologies to promote health and prevent disease, and the best way to deliver health services. 

The programme is aimed at a wide range of sub-sectors within the healthcare sector with a larger focus on long-term care and the acute sub-sectors. This makes the programme particularly relevant to nurses working in nursing homes.


This programme is delivered online and it takes approximately eight months to complete. Please note that start date of 6 September 2023 is approximate.

AIM

The aim of this course is to equip graduates with the knowledge to support them in the coordination and management of infection prevention and control service in the clinical setting.


LEARNING OUTCOMES

1.    Demonstrate an understanding of the principles and practice of infection prevention and control.

2.    Demonstrate an understanding of the appropriate management of infections caused by different pathogenic microorganisms.

3.    Investigate the transmission of endemic and epidemic infections from sufficient knowledge of the characteristics and transmission of causative organisms.

4.    Select appropriate methods for control of hospital and community acquired infectious diseases and infections.

5.    Discuss the principles of microbiology in the prevention and control of infection.

6.    Design, implement and evaluate co-ordinated infection control methods utilising tools such as audit and surveillance.

7.    Discuss management and leadership theories and practices applicable to infection prevention and control.



CONTENT

The Postgraduate Certificate in Infection Prevention and Control is comprised of the following four modules. Click on the module codes to view the module descriptors.

Modules (30 credits total)

  • BU6010 Leadership and Management of Infection Prevention & Control (10 credits)
  • EH6146 The Principles and Clinical Practices of Infection Prevention & Control (10 credits)
  • EH6147 Infection Prevention & Control Quality Improvement & Patient Safety (5 credits)
  • MB6009 Principles of Microbiology (5 credits)


DELIVERY

The course is a wholly online programme with online interaction between lecturers and students via discussion boards, announcements and discussion boards.

Where appropriate, there are some live online workshops delivered on Microsoft Teams (which are also recorded and shared with students via their online classroom – Canvas). 


ASSESSMENT

Assessment is by the continuous assessment method (e.g., written assignments, MCQs, graded online discussion boards) There are no formal exams associated with this programme. The pass standard for each module is 40%. 


WHO SHOULD ATTEND


Prospective students who work in biological sciences, nursing, medical and health sciences, public health, and social sciences may apply for this course.


ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Academic/qualification Requirements

Applicants must have a minimum of a Second-Class Honours Grade 2 in a primary honours degree (NFQ, Level 8) in one of the following subject areas: biological sciences, nursing, medical and health sciences, public health, and social sciences.  Qualified nurses and midwives without a primary degree and who are registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland are also eligible to apply. 

Applicants who do not meet the above entry requirements may be recommended for entry to the programme following a review of their individual qualifications and experience under the University Recognition for Prior Learning (RPL) policy.

For applicants with qualifications completed outside of Ireland

Applicants must meet the required entry academic grade, equivalent to Irish requirements. For more information see the UCC Qualification Comparison page.

Technical Requirements

This programme will be delivered wholly online. As such, there are specific technical requirements that you need to meet.

  • You will need access to a laptop or desktop (either Mac OS or Windows) running a relatively recent operating system (Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10, or Mac OSX 10.8, 10.9, 10.10, or later). Access to the Canvas Virtual Learning Environment is supported by UCC through IOS and Android apps, which are available from the respective App stores.
  • You will need access to a reliable broadband connection with at least 2MB download speeds. You can test your broadband or 4G speeds by visiting http://www.speedtest.net.
  • You must have a modern web browser installed. The most reliable options for use with UCC online learning are Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. Download and installation instructions will be provided. Safari is not suitable.
  • You must have Java and Flash Runtimes installed. Download and installation instructions will be provided.
  • You will require an Office suite of software (Microsoft Office 2003 or later or equivalent) and a PDF reader (preferably Adobe Acrobat Reader XI or later). Please note that registered UCC students have access to discounted software from Microsoft and Adobe.

To engage productively and successfully with the content, basic technical computer skills such as familiarity with word processing, web browsing, and email is recommended.

English Language Requirements

CERTIFICATION

Successful students will be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Infection Prevention and Control (Level 9) from University College Cork.


PROGRESSION ROUTES

MSc Infection Prevention & Control: Progression to the new MSc Infection Prevention & Control (Online) programme is possible once all assessments are successfully completed with a final minimum result of 60% or over for the complete programme.

Master of Public Health: Progression to the Master of Public Health (Online) is possible once all assessments are successfully completed. Note that acceptance onto the MPH with certificate module exemptions will only be considered within five years from the date of award of the certificate.


FEES

The subsidised cost of this programme is €1,995 per learner for LHP Skillnet member companies. Payment is over two instalments. The first instalment is €1,000 and the second instalment is €995.

The non-subsidised cost is €2,800 per learner.

To be eligible for the subsidised price you must be working in the private healthcare sector in Ireland. Otherwise the full price applies.
