Course Description
Aim
The aim of this course is to increase the knowledge and understanding of underlying causes of behaviours which are challenging along with early intervention and non-physical methods for preventing or managing challenging behaviour through recognition of triggers. The course also reviews the evidenced-based guidelines to be implemented in response to episodes of behaviour that challenges. Furthermore, it provides clarity to service providers on circumstances when a restrictive practice is permitted and how it may be applied in accordance with national policies, guidelines, and best professional practice.
Content
This course incorporates the new HIQA Guidance on Restrictive Practice (2023), the related Assessment Judgement Framework and Quality Improvement Plan.
- Regulatory requirements in relation to managing behaviour that is challenging
- Trends and analysis: HIQA findings in relation to management of behaviour that is challenging
- Understanding dementia and potential changes to cognitive function
- Providing person-centred care to residents with cognitive issues
- Understanding what are behaviours that challenge
- 5-stage approach to behaviours that challenge
- Primary preventative strategies
- Identifying triggers
- Identifying precursors/cues
- Secondary strategies including de-escalation
- Tertiary strategies
- Immediate responses to episodes of behaviour that is challenging
- Documenting and learning from an episode of challenging behaviour
- Use and misuse of restrictive practices
- Use of psychotropic medication
- Required staff education and training
- Case study review on episodes of behaviour that is challenging
Workshop Delivery
The workshop will be presented via Zoom, with interactive sessions and workshops provided throughout. Training will run from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The workshop will be delivered by a senior member of HCI’s Quality and Safety Team.
Who Should Attend
PIC, Deputy PIC, CNM, Staff Nurse, HCA
Certification
Learners who successfully complete the workshop will be awarded a certificate of attendance from LHP Skillnet.
Fees
The subsidised cost of this workshop is €135 per learner for LHP Skillnet member companies. Non-members are welcome to book the workshop at the full price of €210.
To be eligible for the subsidised price you must be working in the private healthcare sector in Ireland. Otherwise the full price applies.

Delivered by the HCI, the Advanced Care Management Programme (Advanced CaMP) aims to provide a comprehensive body of knowledge for key individuals within nursing homes, highlighting the regulatory and best practice requirements, and providing participants with the skills to apply the tools and techniques to support their implementation.
The programme may be booked as a completed programme of 16 workshops, or workshop may be booked individually.
