Course Description
Practice nursing is the fastest growth area in nursing in the last decade. The practice nurse provides care to the practice population across the lifespan ranging from babies, children, adolescents, adults and the elderly. This programme will address acute and chronic conditions, health promotion and preventative health including immunisations and specific health needs across the life span.
AIM
The aim of this programme is to prepare nurses working in general practice for the diverse nature of the Practice Nurse role.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
On completion of this programme, the student will be able to …
1. Have an understanding of the role of the practice nurse as part of the primary care team
2. Have an understanding of Scope of Practice, legal issues and documentation relevant to practice nursing
3. Understand the role of chronic disease management in primary care and appropriate guidelines

- Scope of Practice, legal issues, documentation
- Policies, procedures and guidelines
- Mental Health
- Health Promotion/prevention Clinical input
- Case studies
- Inhaler techniques
- Immunisation – adult, paediatric and travel
- Nursing management and care of patients with common chronic conditions
- Treatment room management
- Wound care/tissue viability
- Venepuncture
DELIVERY
The 7-week programme is delivered live online via Zoom. Live lectures take place one/two afternoons per week.
Attendance at all live lectures is required in order to be awarded a certificate.
Participants will be provided with relevant reading material and directed towards further reading to enhance programme content.
ASSESSMENT
Assessment will be ongoing throughout the programme.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Nurses currently employed as practice nurses.
ENTRY CRITERIA
Participants should be currently employed as a practice nurse and have commenced the role within the past 12 months.
CERTIFICATION
Learners who successfully complete the programme will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance from LHP Skillnet and accredited by NMBI.
FEES
The subsidised cost of this programme is €400 per learner for LHP Skillnet member companies. The non-subsidised cost is €600 per learner.
To be eligible for the subsidised price you must be working in the private healthcare sector in Ireland. Otherwise the full price applies.
