The programme aims to enhance the knowledge of healthcare workers surrounding the principles of infection prevention and control. The rise in healthcare associated infections continues to present problems to the Irish healthcare system. The course aims to promote a consistent approach to implementing successful infection prevention and control measures in institutions, thereby reducing the risk of HCAI's to patients and residents. It is an opportunity for all involved in the delivery of healthcare to update their knowledge, skills and understanding of infection prevention and control while striving to provide safe and effective care.

The programme aims to enhance the knowledge of healthcare workers surrounding the principles of infection prevention and control.

The course aims to promote a consistent approach to implementing successful infection prevention and control measures in institutions, thereby reducing the risk of HCAI's to patients and residents.

  1. Introduction to infection prevention & control
  2. Brief outline of the National Standards for the prevention & control of HCAI
  3. Microbiology (fungi, bacteria and viruses)
  4. Chain of infection
  5. Transmission of infection (contact, droplet & airborne)
  6. Standard precautions overview
  7. Hand hygiene ( including practical session)
  8. Personal protective equipment
  9. Cleaning and disinfection
  10. Waste management
  11. Sharps
  12. Management of linen
  13. Respiratory and cough etiquette
  14. Healthcare associated infection
  15. MRSA
  16. Transmission based precautions
  17. Clostridium Difficile
  18. Management of an outbreak (Novovirus, influenza)
