Overview

The Certificate in Coaching (QQI Level 6 Award ‘Professional Coaching Practice and Ethics’) is an ideal starting place to support new staff during onboarding to focus on a strengths-based approach to work, encouraging them to identify resources and knowledge that will help them to excel in their role. Any role within your organization will benefit from the insights and tools which form the basis of a coaching conversation. This course is taught in line with the competencies of the International Coaching Federation (ICF) or European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC).

Aim

This course is intended to teach the theory of coaching and provide the opportunity to develop the practical experience through course work and class structure. The balance of lecture style, practical breakouts and course assignments ensure that graduates will confidently step forward into working with internal or external clients, as well as their own teams.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, participants will:

  • Be able to host a coaching conversation in line with international best practice.
  • Understand how to create the initial agreement of how coach and client/mentor and mentee will work together.
  • Develop key coaching skills such as listening and questioning, evoking awareness, management the relationship and selecting appropriate tools.
  • Know the key influencing factors on human decisions and actions, such as values, beliefs, and emotional intelligence.
  • Confidently navigate the coaching relationship from initial goal setting, enhanced self-awareness, resource identification and an action list to move forward.

Performance Evaluation

30-minute recorded coaching sessions between class participants.

Course Delivery

This is a live online classroom programme hosted on Zoom. Classes are held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Attendees are expected to fully participate in classes with camera on and microphone available to unmute. Breakouts, discussions, Q&A, and demonstrations are vital parts of the course delivery.

Evaluation, Assessment & Grading

In addition to the course classes, participants will have the following course work which is distributed over the course timeline.

Peer Coaching

8 x 60-minute coaching sessions to be completed; 4 sessions in the role of the coach, and 4 in the role of being coached. These sessions are with other course participants. Logs are competed after these sessions.

Required Reading

One book review (350–500 words) and one journal article review (350–500 words).

Reflective Essay

One 2,500-word essay which will focus on your experience of the course, how you have developed the competencies, and your future plans for professional development.

Performance Evaluation

One 30-minute recorded coaching session, recorded on Zoom, facilitated by Kingstown College.

Learner support is available during business hours for assistance with assignments queries, class access, etc.

Who Should Attend

There are no academic requirements for entry to this course. Participants are expected to have a good level of professional English to host a coaching session, and to have a positive attitude for learning and collaborating in the classes.

Anyone interested in, or with a responsibility for hosting development conversations and future-focused conversations will benefit enormously from this course content and skills. Frontline staff interacting with residents or clients, managers leading a team, or senior leaders guiding the human resources of the organisation will all find useful tools and techniques to lead the workforce of today, and have future-focused, strengths-based conversations which help people move forward with actions.

Teaching This Course

Lecturers on this course are members of the Kingstown College senior team. They are experienced in delivering the accredited Diploma course as well as other coach/mentor training and have extensive coaching experience and awareness of the application of coaching and mentoring within organisations. Cohorts will be assigned one lecturer for the duration of the course so that they can monitor the progress of each participant and offer relevant feedback.
