The programme aims to enhance the knowledge of healthcare workers surrounding the principles of infection prevention and control. The rise in healthcare associated infections continues to present problems to the Irish healthcare system. It is an opportunity for all involved in the delivery of healthcare to update their knowledge, skills and understanding of infection prevention and control while striving to provide safe and effective care.

Course Aim:
The programme aims to1:
- Enhance the knowledge of healthcare workers surrounding the principles of infection prevention and control.
- Promote a consistent approach to implementing successful infection prevention and control measures in institutions, thereby reducing the risk of HCAI’s to patients and residents

- Microbiology (fungi, bacteria and viruses)
- Chain of infection
- Transmission of infection (contact, droplet & airborne)
- Standard precautions overview
- Hand hygiene (including practical session)

- Cleaning and disinfection
- Waste management
- Sharps
- Management of linen
- Respiratory and cough etiquette
- Healthcare associated infection
- MRSA
- Transmission based precautions
- Clostridium Difficile
- Management of an outbreak (Novovirus, influenza)
