    Course Description:

    Healthcare Assistants may benefit from support and encouragement, in choosing activities which are stimulating and life enhancing for the older adult.  This workshop aims to inform carers on how to connect and engage with older adults, using everyday materials and objects, to trigger memory evoke conversation and create fun.

Course Aim:

This workshop aims to facilitate the participants to gain an understanding of how knowing a person will allow them to select and suggest activities, which will be meaningful to their resident and offer choice.   They will be able to source ideas for engagement, reminiscence, and social integration, and add support to their Resident's needs.

Course Objectives and Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this workshop the participant should be able to;

  • Use everyday items to create conversations and learn about their interests

  • Respond to the human needs of the resident throughout the year, and offer 1:1 and group activities for person centred care.

  • Understand that each person has a song-list which is a rich source of pleasure

  • Look to nature for inspiration, calm, and overcoming challenges.
  • Connect  with people living with dementia, to maintain their personhood.

Trainer’s Profile

  • Trainer Name: Engaging Activities - Joyce Fitzpatrick & Elizabeth Fitzgerald

Joyce has 12 years experience as Activity Coordinator in a Nursing Home for an average of 150 residents with 30 Independent providers. She has been involved in the design and implication of a diverse programme of recreational and social activities. She is also experienced in the more challenging issues of running a Nursing Home, with five years in Advocacy.  Joyce has a background in botanical science and 10 years in Environmental Education. She brings her love of field and forest to engage residents and has a gift for creating an atmosphere of warmth, happiness and interest, entertaining with song, piano, and poetry. Joyce is qualified in Dementia Training; Dementia Care Mapping; Setting up Activities for Older Adults (DIT), and Train the Trainer. She is motivated above all by the Uniqueness of each person in her care and is committed to improving their quality of life wherever possible, offering choice and self expression. Professional/Academic Qualifications: BSc. Degree  Biochemistry /Botany. Diploma in Horticulture Level 7 Setting up Activities older Adults DIT. Dementia Care Matters /Butterfly Technique. Certificate in Dementia Care Mapping Bradford University. Train the trainer Ipad / Smart Ageing course ongoing currently Elizabeth has over 10 years experience as a Workshop Musician for older adults. She has the ability to create a warm and active group atmosphere with her independently designed workshops, using interactive percussion and memorable songs with the piano accordion. Elizabeth is experienced in Administration and Technology, she brings her organisational skills to plan, set up, and evaluate Activities in Nursing Homes to great effect, and is up to date on HIQA requirements. Her organisational skills, sense of humour, and calm nature are of great benefit to the implementation and training of Engaging Activities. Elizabeth has completed Dementia training, Creative Arts, Sonas, and Train the Trainer. Professional/Academic Qualifications Level 7 Arts in Care Age and Opportunity Piano Accordian  musician.
